Harper Adams have updated their requirements and guidance around fire safety on the campsite this year. We have updated the campsite layout, equipment requirement and safety rules to ensure we comply.
Pitches
Each family/group will be assigned a 10m x 10m pitch on the campsite. These pitches will be spaced 6m apart to create a fire break between pitches. These will be clearly set out on the campsite prior to your arrival. Please set up on the 10m x 10m assigned to your family/group and ensure that there is nothing in the 6m fire break between pitches.
Event shelters and gazebos
If you bring these, please ensure that they are located in front of your tent, caravan or motorhome within the 10m x 10m pitch.
Caravans
Please ensure that the caravan is fitted with a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm. This will be checked on arrival.
Please bring a fully-charged fire extinguisher. This will be checked on arrival and should be kept near an entrance door.
Please bring a fire blanket. This will be checked on arrival and should be kept near the cooking area.
Please bring a torch for emergencies. Do not use candles within the caravan.
Please keep gas cylinders outside the caravan, unless a specially ventilated compartment is used.
Never leave children (aged 12 or younger) alone inside the caravan and make sure everyone knows how to use the escape windows and doors.
Tents
Please bring a fully-charged fire extinguisher. This will be checked on arrival and should be kept near an entrance door.
Please bring a torch for emergencies. Do not use candles within any tents.
Separate smaller tents for older children (aged 13 and over) can be located on a family pitch beside the main tent. These will be treated as a unit and a 6m fire break will not be required between tents on the pitch. This is on the understanding that the smaller tent will primarily be used as a sleeping area and no cooking equipment is used in these tents.
Several smaller tents can be located together on a group pitch. These will be treated as a unit and a 6m fire break will not be required between tents on the pitch. This is on the understanding that there will be a shared cooking area established outside the smaller tents which will primarily be used as sleeping areas and no cooking equipment is used in these tents.
Self-catering
Please establish a safe cooking area on your pitch. Be sure the cooker is stable, out of draughts and somewhere it won’t get knocked over.
Please do not use cooking equipment in small tents or sleeping areas in larger tents.
Please avoid using liquid fuel appliances if possible and only change disposable gas cylinders when they’re completely empty.
Please do not leave a cooker burning and unattended, including when you go to sleep.
Barbecues
Only gas barbecues are permitted on the campsite.
Gas barbecues should be freestanding, elevated on legs and positioned on flat surfaces. Locate the barbecue away from tents, trees, and hedges.
Please bring an additional fully-charged fire extinguisher and keep this beside the gas barbecue while it is in use.
Please do not leave barbecues unattended. In particular keep children and games away from the barbecue.
Please ensure the barbecue is cool before moving it.
Please make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder. Change cylinders outdoors if possible, or in a well-ventilated area. If you suspect a leak to the cylinder or pipework, brush soapy water around the joints and watch for bubbles – tighten to fix, but do not overtighten. If in doubt about the safety of the barbecue, please do not use it. After cooking, turn off the gas cylinder before turning off at the controls to ensure any residual gas in the pipework is used up
Please do not take a smouldering or lit barbecue into a tent or caravan. Even if you have finished cooking your barbecue will still give off fumes for some hours after use.
Please do not bring disposable barbecues.
Motor vehicles
There are often a lot of people walking around the campsite and children playing. Please ensure that you do not drive on the campsite any more than is really necessary. Please keep speeds low.
One your tent or caravan is set up, please move your car off the campsite and into one of the car parks.
If you are sleeping in a motorhome, using a rooftop tent or similar, then please park up safely and do not move the vehicle during the week.
